The Need

Lack of planning time in charter schools, caused by mandatory personal development during planning periods and dwindling school resources, leaves educators unprepared. Teachers cited this, along with a shortage of activity ideas, as major impediments. These issues, leading to decreased student motivation and lower test scores in some social studies classes, highlighted the urgent need for a microlesson.

The Process

To guide task analysis, the resource teacher and I sat in on a few of the social studies classes. I used Jane Bozarth’s guidelines to see if training would be appropriate to use. The teachers had been performing well up until that point in the year; therefore, it was clear they had been properly trained. The resource teacher––who served as the SME for this project–– decided that the issue was not in pedagogy delivery but rather a lack of creativity when putting together lessons, leading to student disengagement. The SME and I decided that a system that gave teachers ideas as to how to proceed once content had been introduced would serve as the perfect aid, given the time limitations. Additionally, the program would serve as a hub where the school’s social studies teachers could go for ideas and continue to add to it in the future.

Action Map

I consulted the subject matter expert (SME), a fifteen-year veteran in education, to develop the action map and establish the overall goal for this project. We decided to measure progress by monitoring a verbal survey from the teachers. We then identified the actions required to help social studies teachers in using standards when choosing activities for classroom use.

Text- Based Storyboard and Visual Mockup

Once the action map was completed and approved, I began working on a text-based storyboard that incorporates these key actions into a cohesive review. This was followed by a visual mock-up that delineated basic design decisions.

Interactive Prototype

I developed an interactive prototype to collect feedback on the functionality of the project before diving in and developing the project in full. The prototype included the title page, introduction, objectives, cluster options, question 1, question 2, and question 3.

Full Development

After collecting feedback from the SME and the educators who would ultimately be using the microcourse, it was time to develop the project in full. The project consists of more than 50 scenes designed in Vyond and Animaker. These were then transferred to Articulate Storyline 360.
