The Need
Effective, timely reports are vital for law enforcement investigations and, ultimately, to uphold justice. This course was created to address the time and resource strain officers face due to report volume, which impacts community service. The course delves into the basics of law enforcement report writing, including how to structure and write one effectively for both federal and local contexts. Additionally, the course explores how AI tools can streamline this vital process, equipping the learner with the knowledge to leverage AI for more efficient and precise report writing.

The Process
My design process began with research into the fundamentals of report writing. I identified the most common mistakes made by officers made in the field and started to make design concessions. For further support, and to corroborate and confirm my findings, I consulted subject matter experts (SMEs)—including law enforcement professors and legal professionals—to ensure the content reflected real-world needs and regulatory challenges, making the learning objectives practical and relevant.
Action Map & Interactive Prototype
I then created an action map outlining key steps in the process of report writing. This led to an interactive prototype that allowed for early testing of the course’s flow, exercises, and real-world scenarios. Feedback from this phase refined the user experience, especially for the complex legal and ethical dilemmas.

Full Development
The course was fully developed after prototype feedback from the SMEs. It features dynamic, scenario-based modules simulating both foundational report writing and AI-integrated tasks, with animations, interactive decision points, and AI-generated text examples. Built in Rise 360 and Articulate Storyline 360, the course offers an immersive environment for applying these newly-learned skills, preparing the learner to apply these in the field.
